Meeting with Ms. Preeyanti Fernando, Chairperson of the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS)

On Thursday, 27 November (6 Azar), Mr. Ali Kebriaei-Zadeh, Cultural Counsellor of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Colombo, met with Ms. Preeyanti Fernando, Chairperson of the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies, to discuss the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Cultural Section of the Embassy and BCIS.

During the meeting, Ms. Fernando stated that BCIS has scheduled the introductory Persian language course to commence online on 11 December (20 Azar). She emphasized two key considerations for the Centre. First, given the international reputation of BCIS, and in view of the fact that the provision of a Persian language instructor falls under the responsibility of the Iranian Cultural Section, the Centre expects the designated instructor to be fully proficient in English as the medium of instruction, as well as to possess strong technical skills in language teaching. The instructor should also employ a method and approach that meet the standards of BCIS.

She further noted that personal qualities such as patience in responding to questions and the ability to engage learners with composure are essential. Ms. Fernando requested that the Cultural Section arrange for all students to have access to the required textbooks from the first day of the course. She added that the MoU has been signed for two years and may be extended subject to the satisfaction of both parties. BCIS, she said, generally strives to introduce not only the language but also the culture, customs, and literature of the countries whose languages are taught at the Centre.

Mr. Kebriaei-Zadeh, after expressing his appreciation, remarked that Iran and Sri Lanka have enjoyed centuries of interaction grounded in mutual respect. He noted that the Persian language can further strengthen these ties by fostering deeper understanding. He explained that the Saadi Foundation in Iran is the national authority responsible for promoting Persian language education worldwide, working with highly qualified experts and enjoying strong international recognition. Therefore, the Foundation fully understands the expectations of BCIS regarding the selection of the instructor and the provision of educational materials. He added that offering Persian language training at the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies will undoubtedly yield valuable results for BCIS, the Saadi Foundation, and the Cultural Section of the Embassy.
